The Bible’s Views on Magic

Why did I write the Bible’s views instead of my views? 1) The Bible is Truth, it is the Word of God, and 2) I am an imperfect person who needs to go to the Truth to extinguish lies I believed from the devil.

After going through some verses in the Bible about witchcraft, sorceries, magic and such, I realised that whenever God mentions those words, it is associated with evil/demonic forces. E.g. Pharaoh’s magicians did their crafts to replicate the plague.

“Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.”

Exodus 7:11, KJV

However, God did not address Aaron and Moses as magicians when they used the rod because God is the One who did the works. And usually, when God and Jesus do something, it is not called magic; rather, it is called miracles, wonders, signs, etc.

Thus, the Bible clearly views that magic is black, it is evil. It is never good or white, nor is it grey. Hence, I can say that Elsa’s ice powers from the movie Frozen is witchcraft. The writers made her that she could create ice on her own accord, not her praying to a character who represented God then the God figure sends the blizzard.

Also, some people might argue that Elijah from the Bible did good magic. He, however, didn’t summon fire upon the alter himself, God did that (1 Kings 18:30-38).

“Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.”

1 Kings 18:37-38, KJV

I also found that the word magic is just a word to replace an old English word wiccecræft or witchcraft, and it is derived from a Latin word magice meaning sorcery. All of which are mentioned in the Bible as satanic.

Yes, the present day witchdoctors, those who summon spirits and immerse themselves in witchcraft exist and what they do are scary. In every country, there’re always people who do those things whether it be big or small. I once saw a retail shop selling demonic playing cards, and heard of a board game that requires the player to play with satan and his demons.

At the same time, satan can be transformed into an angel of light, and can present magic as good and such. So many of the movies and stories we watch and read, including superheroes with powers, are considered witchcraft. Especially those stories from Disney.

“And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.”

2 Corinthians 11:14, KJV

Therefore, I don’t write magic presented as good or of God. Even if I include magic in a story, it would be condemned as of the devil.

So dear reader, I have these questions for you:

1. Is magic from satan or from God?

2. Can magic be from God and satan at the same time?
